Wellesley's soil runs two ways inside one town line. Up on the high ground through Wellesley Hills and the Fells, the soil is glacial till. Paxton, the state soil of Massachusetts, is the till soil of this part of Norfolk County, and it sits over a dense lodgement till layer that water will not pass through. Rain perches on it, so you get spongy ground in April and hard compaction by July. Drop toward Lower Falls and the Charles and the ground turns to sand and gravel that drains fast, sometimes faster than turf wants. Fuller Brook and Waban Brook carry runoff from more than half of Wellesley down to the river, through channels dug and shaped for flood control starting in 1899.
